Designs for GuixSD

Abstract

GuixSD (Guix System Distribution) is the advanced distribution of the GNU operating system. These are my proposed logo and website designs for GuixSD and Guix, its package manager.

These are my proposed logo and website designs for GuixSD, the advanced distribution of the GNU operating system, and Guix, its package manager.

Figure 1.

Figure 1. The proposed logo for GuixSD is the head of a wildebeest made as if it were a metal bar bent and twisted to form the shape of the head and horns.

This logo was accepted and it is in use to identify the system distribution. The logo can be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC-BY-SA) license. The source files are available in the project's artwork repository.

Figure 2.

Figure 2. The rejected logo of Guix is a white cube in isometric view drawn against a circular background with three colors: black, green and blue.

Unlike GuixSD, Guix, the package manager, already had a logo, but I proposed the one above anyways. Although the logo was well received, it was decided to keep using the old one.

The website design in Figure 3 below was accepted in general, but with some changes in the wording. However, since GuixSD is not ready for production and for the average Jane, we decided to use a modified design oriented to attract more developers and advanced users until the software reaches a version closer to beta status (see Figure 4 for the modified design).

Despite being alpha, GuixSD and its package manager are functional. Advanced users can start testing them to report bugs and help the project in general. If you would like to join, please visit the website.
